Circa Diem with...Edie Bens

Edie Bens is a storyteller, whose craft was honed performing in the Working Men's Clubs of Swansea from an early age. Her music is inspired by the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, and Joni Mitchell, and like the greats of folk, country, and Americana before her, she crafts songs that offer a glimpse into her world, capturing every soaring high and heart-wrenching low along the way. She jokingly calls herself the “Dolly Parton of Wales”, a comparison that holds true in more ways than one. Behind the signature look, the banjo, and the masterfully crafted songwriting lies grit, backbone, and steely determination.

Her talent has already earned her the backing of Welsh music icons, opening for both Tom Jones and Kelly Jones of Stereophonics. She’s also earned herself support slots with Howl & The Hum, and KT Tunstall, so don’t mistake her knack for writing a great pop hook as the extent of her talent. Edie Bens is a once-in-a-generation artist, destined to be remembered among Wales’ greatest lyricists and musicians, and if you listen closely, you just might hear a tale or two.

Your track of the day
Sex And The City by Audrey Hobert

What time of day do you feel most inspired?
Around 11pm which is probably very inconvenient for everyone around me! I love to write when the world is quiet.

What do you daily to get into your creative mindset?
I spend the morning procrastinating by taking an excessive amount of time to brew coffee and write ideas in my notes app. Usually does the trick!! I also love people watching on public transport so will sometimes get on a bus with no destination in mind to find some inspo.

Tell us a bit about your self-care routine
I’ll be honest I’m not the best at self care! But I do have a bath most evenings.

Where's your favourite space to experience music?
The car!! I fell in love with music in my Dad's car. Driving with music turned up way too loud is my favourite thing in the world and the only reason I still own a car. I keep this in mind when making my own records.

Imagine your discography as a menu…What songs are you picking for Starters, Mains and Dessert?
Starter - Baby Blue: Blue Cheese and Pear Salad
Main - Better Without You: Macaroni Cheese
Dessert - Giving Up Giving you up: Goats Cheese and Gingerbread Biscuits
Drink - Hard To Handle: Penderyn Whisky

You’ve recently released your latest EP, ‘Songs for Myfanwy’, which we absolutely adore. Can you tell us a bit about how you’re feeling now that it’s been out in the world for a couple of weeks?
Thank you!! It’s so lush to have it finally out!! I worked really hard on this EP over a period of long time.

So I’m really a mixture of proud and relieved hahaha!!

I’m excited to get stuck into the next project but I’ve been trying my best to enjoy the moment and celebrate it with people I made it with.

If someone is finding you for the first time through this EP, which song would you recommend they listen to first as an introduction to you and why?
Hard To Handle, it’s the last song that I wrote for the EP so maybe I’m biased but it feels the most me.

Where is somewhere you’d really love to perform this EP live?
I would love to perform it at a castle hahah!! Any castle based festivals please reach out.

Your EP is in some ways an ode to your home, so on that note, imagine it’s your last 24 hours in your hometown, what are you doing?
Oh gosh!

Well I’d wake up and go straight to Pobbles beach for a swim with the dogs.

Get a coffee in mumbles and have Joes Ice Cream for lunch.

I’d go for a drive in my dads car listening to Ben Howards first album. Then spend the afternoon with my family.

In the evening I’d meet my home friends at the White Rose for Guinness and talk about the end of the world

If you could go back and give advice to your younger self just starting in music, what would it be?
Craft is everything! Don’t rush, you know yourself better than anyone else.

If you could time travel for the day, what era of music would you most like to visit?
The 70s!!! To see Fleetwood Mac

You have 24 hours to master a musical skill, what is it?
I would LOVE to able to play the Harp.

You have 24 hours, which musician/industry person would you spend it with and why?
My band they’re my best mates.

What should we keep an eye out for next?
Maybe a debut album?! đź‘€
